Mother Of Abandoned Two-Year-Old Speaks Out

Antoinette Smith is reportedly the mother of the child who was abandoned at a Goodwill Donation Center in Mississippi. She is now explaining what happened to her 2-year-old son and claims she did not abandon her child.

Smith told WREG that she was traveling from Memphis to Nashville and left her child with the sister of a male acquaintance. However, later in the interview she claimed the sister was his girlfriend.

“If I knew that, I said I wouldn’t have left my baby like that,” Smith can be heard saying in the phone interview.

She alleged the man was trying to force her into prostition, “He was like, ‘You better get out there and [prostitute]’ and all that type of stuff. I told him, ‘I’m not doing nothing.'”

Smith did not identify the man nor his girlfriend. The child is currently in CPS custody and it’s not clear if charges will be filed against the  mother or the two other individuals.

The little boy was left at the Goodwill Donation Center in Southaven, Mississippi at around 9:40 a.m. on Dec. 14. He had nothing but a  plastic grocery bag with a note and change of clothes.

Later that same day, USA Today reported a suspect was arrested. Southaven Police also  released the following statement, “Southaven Police received numerous tips, and with the assistance of F.B.I. offices in both Mississippi, and Tennessee, along with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department a suspect related to this case was taken into custody in Memphis.”

The statement continued, “We would like to thank all of the citizens who showed concern for the child, rest assured he is well, and being taken care of and will be re-united with family when CPS determines this is proper.”

Our security leaders are working closely with local authorities, including reviewing surveillance footage. At this time, the matter is an ongoing investigation with the police.”

The two-year-old child has not been identified.
